TL;DR: Creating the UBER of beauty services

DID is a shared economy application, self-coined as “the disrupter of the beauty industry.” The app connects certified beauty professionals to consumers, providing hair, nails, and makeup services on demand and to your doorstep. DID’s concept was birthed from a few agency vets; a marketing director, product architects, a technology director, and a creative lead. Together, we ideated solutions for all occasions and scenarios, including the elderly who may not be able to leave their home, but still want to have something special.

What’s in a name?

In our initial brainstorm, we tossed around many naming ideas, but it was difficult to land on a name that was edgy, short, and encompassed everything the app had to offer. As a fan of Missy Elliot, I couldn’t help to get her lyrics out of my head during the sessions, and the slang “did” just seemed to fit the vibe we were going for. I designed the logo and crafted the visual brand, exploring colours, type, and photography treatments. Then turned my attention to the user interface design, exploring ways to change up the user interactions.

Interactions/ Interfacing

Interactions/ Interfacing

To keep the project’s momentum and excitement running, I initially created the user flow and interactions. We knew we wanted to offer three services: Hairstyling, nails, and makeup, and wanted to keep the search functionality and browsing simple and visually dynamic.

Users can easily see who they have favourited, the beautician ratings, and their work images during a search. This function was also beneficial to the beautician who doesn’t usually have a platform to showcase their portfolio and garner new fans and customers.

Providing a service

Providing a service

Once a beautician has passed all the necessary steps to be a provider on the app, they can list their available services and set their own prices. Giving themselves the freedom and exploratory power outside of the traditional salon.

For a user, during the booking process, all they need to do and to select which service(s) they want from a single beautician to book. With the app’s help, the two connect; since the beautician has the power listing their availability and offerings, they are already equipped for the job.
